Dis-order means that something is out of order… (Yeah, a little obvious)

Skin is an exterior organ of the body

Beyond our stoic but informative description above,

Inflammation is a red flag and serves us by letting us by calling out attention to it; that redness on your body is usually a clear sign that your body is working overtime to removing the toxin.

Acne can also be described is the term we use for plugged pores or blackheads and whiteheads, pimples, and even deeper tissued lumps called cysts or nodules that can occur all over the body.

More commonly known to us as zits or pimples, acne is first made aware to us by inflammation of the skin. But before it was even seen the pore had been blocked for about 2-3 weeks.

So if your desire would be to rid yourself of acne, understand that your primary goal will not be to just remove these nasty anomalies with a one-time treatment cream (Not that I don’t recommend certain products),but to understand that our skins are trying to tell us that something is wrong through it’s breaking out. And more than not, unless your just going through puberty, those nasty zits will most likely be repeat offenders…

Why they Show Up!

Hair follicles, which are also often called pores, sometimes get blocked which leads to the blockage of sebum oil and then bacteria begins to grow.

The Sebum (oil) which normally drains to the surface to keep skin lubricated, gets blocked. Some of the blockage can be caused an over production of sebum oil (usually caused by an unhealthy diet), dead skin blocking the pores, or too much lotion.

Chocolate and acne have been intimately linked together for what seem like eternity. But does eating chocolate actually cause an acne breakout? Unfortunately, the answer is yes, but not for the reason you think, and not in everyone. Eating chocolate in and of itself, isn’t going to cause an acne breakout.

Numerous studies have proven that eating chocolate is not directly linked to an acne outbreak, however there are still hundreds or thousands of people that claim that every time they eat chocolate they have acne show up uninvited.

However, chocolate is actually a great way to prevent acne from appearing. Stress has been proven to be a leading cause of acne and chocolate is a great way to combat stress. Chocolate operates as an antidepressant and releases a chemical in the brain known as serotonin. Serotonin is responsible for giving people that happy feeling. So chocolate can actually decrease stress, and therefore decrease acne, by releasing serotonin.

Chocolate also holds almost 1/3 of the daily antioxidants required by an adult. These antioxidants are critical is have in the body in order to fight acne. Antioxidants also help keep skin healthy by protecting it from the free radicals that the body naturally produces. These free radicals not only damage skin but can also destroy an immune system. While antioxidants alone will not cure an acne outbreak, they will strengthen the skin itself, so that the skin is more effective in its battle against acne.

For everyone who “knows” that chocolate has caused them to get acne, they may be right, but for a different reason. It is not uncommon for many people to have a minor allergy to certain foods, and these allergies can actually cause an acne outbreak. Unfortunately, chocolate is one of those foods that many people have a tough time processing. However, small amounts of chocolate will probably not cause an outbreak, but an excessive amount definitely can.

In conclusion, chocolate itself cannot cause an acne outbreak. In fact, the right amount of chocolate is actually very good for the body and can help prevent acne by alleviating stress and introducing critical antioxidants to the body. However, if you have a small allergy to chocolate, the body will naturally cause acne outbreaks as a reaction to it, instead of more recognized allergic reactions such as breaking out in hives.

One of the most common treatments for acne breakouts is by using a range of antibiotics. They are great for treating the bacteria that causes the acne outbreak in the first place. The type of acne that antibiotics address is Propionibacterium acnes, which is bacteria that normally grows within the skin. However, it can cause acne outbreaks when pores get clogged with sebum and dead skin cells.

Antibiotics work in several different ways. Most importantly, it decreases the total number of bacteria that exist around and even inside follicles. Antibiotics also reduce the number of chemicals that are produced by white blood cells. These chemicals can irritate the skin cells and cause irritation and inflammation. The third reason that antibiotics are effective is because they can reduce the amount of free fatty acids within sebum. This also helps reduce the natural response of the skin which is inflammation.

There are 5 common antibiotics that are utilized.

Tetracycline

Tetracycline is easily the most widely used antibiotic that is used to battle acne outbreaks. It is normally taken twice a day at either 500 mg or 250 mg. The largest drawback to tetracycline is that is must be taken on an empty stomach. If this is not done, it cannot be absorbed into the body and will be ineffective.

Erythromycin

Erythromycin is also a common antibiotic to fight acne. It continues to gain popularity because it holds several advantages over tetracycline. It has a built in anti-inflammatory that will decrease the redness and blotchy-ness around the lesions as well as killing the bacteria itself. It can also be taken with food and still be effective. The biggest drawback is that it can cause nausea and upset stomach. However, pregnant women can take it safely.

Minocycline

Minocycline is primarily used to battle against pustular acne. It is a derivative of tetracycline and has been used for a long time. There are some major side effects to be aware of, however they are rare. They include nausea, dizziness, skin color alteration, tooth discoloration, and vomiting.

Doxycycline

Doxycycline is primarily used by people who have not responded well or cannot tolerate either tetracycline and erythromycin. It should be taken on a full stomach, otherwise nausea is a very probably side effect. It also can cause an increased sensitivity to the sun.

Clindamycin

Clindamycin is the most common topical antibiotic, but can also be a successful oral antibiotic as well. The only serious drawback is an intestinal infection known as pseudomembranous colitis.

Oral contraceptives, or birth control, has been around for decades. Over the last 20 years, it has become a popular option for young women looking to get their acne under control, not just to prevent pregnancy. However, as with any hormonal treatments, there are both benefits and potential side effects. It is important to take everything into consideration before making a decision.

Why Birth Control is Effective

Acne develops when sebum and dead skin cells both build up within a hair follicle, they then combine to clog the pore. As they grow, the follicle wall will rupture which allows even more oil and skin cells to accumulate in the pore. This is what causes additional inflammation and bacterial infection.

Birth control pills are effective because they will reduce the amount of sebum that is produced by the skin. It is important to understand that birth control pills are only effective at controlling acne that is caused by excess sebum. When there are other causes of acne affecting someone, birth control pills will not be enough. They are usually most effective when coupled with other treatments. It also may take several months before the birth control can limit sebum production, which means while the bodies hormones are adjusting, the acne may actually get worse before it gets better.

Which Birth Control Pills Are Most Effective

There are currently three estrogen-progestin combination birth control pills that have been approved by the FDA to help treat acne. Ortho Tri-Cyclen, Estrostep, and Yaz have all been tested and approved. They are normally not going to be the first option that a dermatologist will recommend, because they will only help acne that is being created because of excess sebum.

Potential Side Effects

As with any medication or hormone altering prescription, there are always potential side effects that need to be taken into consideration. Several of the more common side effects include: headaches, alteration in the menstrual flow, breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting, depression, diminished libido or sex drive, and increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and blood clots.

The chance of side effects becoming a problem is always an increased risk if:

You are over 35 and are a smoker

Have a history of heart disease

Have a history of cancer of the breast, uterine, or liver

Have a history of blood clots in the legs or lungs

Birth control can be a great way to control certain types of acne and acne outbreaks. However, the choice to use birth control to control acne should be a decision that is made with the consultation of a professional.

Over the last few years, there have been more and more experiments where deep acne scars have been effectively treated with adult stem cells. Unfortunately, this news has not spread as quickly as the industry would have hoped which has left many people confused about the procedure or completely unaware. This has left many unanswered questions swarming in the heads of anyone who has serious acne scars and has yet to find an effective treatment.

Why Haven’t I Heard About This?

The primary reason that many people have not yet heard about this new stem cell treatment for acne scars is because the research has been primarily done in Japan, with only a few clinics in Western Europe starting to use it. So far, it has not been considered an option in the United States.

Where Do the Stem Cells Come From?

Unlike the extremely controversial fetal stem cells, the stem cells used in this procedure is adult stem cells. They are often taken from fat cells surrounding the abdemon. The fat is then placed in a centrifuge and the stem cells are separated out.

What Would This Treatment Entail?

Depending on the country and the clinics practices, the stem cells could come from the person undergoing the treatment or from adult stem cells that have already been collected and preserved. The stem cells would then be mixed into a solution and injected under the scar tissue. The entire process would be very similar to the common collagen injection treatments that are used to treat acne scars currently.

Why Will This Be More Effective Than Current Treatments?

The adult stem cell treatment looks to be more effective for several reasons. The most important reason is that stem cells have the ability to promote healthy and new skin cell regrowth. Current studies are showing that this method is creating more sustainable, long-term results than current methods. This means that this procedure could be done once instead of every few months or years like many current options.

Potential Roadblocks?

There are two big obsticals that must be overcome before this treatment becomes more mainstream. The first problem is that in some areas of the world, the US, there is a perception issue that must be overcome. There seems to be a backlash against any studies or treatments that involve stem cells. The second roadblock is current technology. Currently, there are not enough identifying markers attached to stem cells, which makes getting them and cultivating them more difficult than it will be in the future. While it is already being overcome, it will make the treatment more expensive than it could be.
